BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Howe is a board-certified hospitalist as well as the founder of the annual Women Physicians Wellness Conference in Grand Cayman. She received her Bachelor of Science degrees in English and Biology and her medical degree at the University of Utah before completing her residency and chief residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She began her practice at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. While at Johns Hopkins, she was given the opportunity to develop curricula for the School of Medicine and the Division of Hospitalist Medicine and her passion for curriculum development and teaching was born.
After moving to Kansas City, Dr. Howe directed and taught the Doctors as Educators Faculty Development Series at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Howe also went on to co-direct and teach an advanced version of the course called Teaching for Excellence Faculty Development Course. Dr. Howe’s pursuits to improve medical education also translated to her work as Core Faculty for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Kansas. Here, she serves as the Director of the Resident as Teacher and Chief Resident Transition Curriculums.
Outside her clinical duties, she hosts the annual Women Physicians Wellness Conference, a 3-day event that focuses on topics to further professional development and improve wellness among women physicians. She also teaches on conflict management and negotiation for the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and a variety of other private institutions annually.
Her endeavors in teaching and mentoring have been recognized with a number of honors and awards including receipt of the Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett Woman Mentoring Women Award, a finalist for the student-elected Rainbow Award for “teaching the art of medicine by example”, and the Distinguished Chancellor’s Teaching Award, one of the highest honors given to educators at the University of Kansas.
A prolific speaker and lifelong advocate of improved wellness in medicine, Dr. Howe has given over 200 talks and participated in workshops and conferences both nationally and internationally. Her expertise has earned her national recognition through her unwavering commitment to teaching doctors and other medical professionals how to improve their teaching skills and build wellness into their lives.
